What Causes Wrinkles Around the Eyelids (and How Can You Prevent Them)?

posted in Wrinkles by

It’s certainly difficult to ignore the effects of wrinkles around the eyelids. Wrinkles can make you look older than you feel, more tired than you are, and even more depressed than you otherwise express. In other words, wrinkles around the eyelids can cause a wide variety of issues for patients. But what causes these wrinkles around the eyelids in the first place?

wrinkles around the eyesWe all recognize the link between wrinkles and age. Those who have more wrinkles appear older than those with smooth skin. We tend to think of wrinkles, then, as just something that happens as you age. But that’s not really the whole story. There are several mechanisms working to create wrinkles—and they aren’t necessarily tethered to your age. The relationship might be corollary, but it’s not causal.

So let’s look at some of those causes and try to figure out what causes wrinkles around the eyelid and what eye surgery in Virginia can help you do about it!

Multiple Causes of Wrinkles Around the Eyelids

It turns out, there isn’t one simple thing that causes wrinkles around the eyelids. There are, in fact, a coalitions of forces that can cause issues from Crow’s Feet to droopy eyelids to dark circles. Those reasons include the following:

  • Gravity: As time goes by, gravity tends to pull on your skin—slowly but surely. When you’re young, your skin bounces back like a rubber band, but you lose that elasticity over time. This means that, as gravity pulls your skin stretches and you end up with some excess skin. Around your eyes, in particular, that excess skin has nowhere to go, so it creates folds and wrinkles around your eyes.
  • Lifestyle: There are some lifestyle choices that have been shown, scientifically, to create wrinkles—around your eyes and otherwise. The most devastating lifestyle choice in this regard is smoking cigarettes (or other forms of tobacco). Additionally, stress can cause wrinkles when that stress is pretty constant. The two combined (as often happens) can be incredibly detrimental to the health of your skin.
  • Genetics: As another piece of the puzzle, your genes have a huge impact on the depth, location, and formation of any wrinkles. This is true of your entire body and, thus, is also true around the eyes. Now, this doesn’t mean that, if your mother has a certain wrinkle you are fated to get that same wrinkle. But it may indicate a predisposition to certain types of wrinkles and lines. In other words, if your mother had crow’s feet, it doesn’t guarantee you’ll get crow’s feet—but it’s a strong possibility.

This list is by no means exhaustive—and the reality is that most eyelid wrinkles form due to some combination of causes.

Treating Eyelid Wrinkles

When it comes to eye surgery, Virginia patients that visit Dr. Nazemzadeh and Dr. Rostami have incredibly high expectations—and they should. Our surgeons have shown that they’re among the best eye surgery experts Virginia has to offer. When it comes to treating wrinkles around the eyes, the best procedure will likely depend on your personal preferences and on your particular set of wrinkles.

For example, crow’s feet can sometimes be treated with an injection of Botox. However, if wrinkles are caused by a high degree of excess skin, than a surgical eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) may be the best solution. However, if patients are either averse to or not a good fit for surgery, other options may be explored.

Dr. Rostami and Dr. Nazemzadeh are among the best surgeons in the Virginia and Washington DC area to explore those options with. If you want to know more about the wrinkles around your eyes—how they form, what they cost you, and how to treat them—contact Dr. Nazemzadeh or Dr. Rostami to schedule a confidential consultation.

Perhaps how your eyelid wrinkles formed isn’t quite as important to you as how to get rid of those wrinkles—and that quest can begin today!
