Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Some of the most successful rejuvenation procedures and products have their origins within the human body. Your body, after all, is very good at repairing itself. Plastic and cosmetic surgeons have discovered ways to heighten the human body’s innate rejuvenation abilities and properties. One such discovery is known as Platelet-Rich-Plasma, or PRP. Known as “The Secret of the Stars,” platelet-rich plasma is a compound naturally found in your own body. As the term indicates, it is a high concentration of blood derived platelets surrounded in its own plasma. Since it is drawn from your own blood, the risk of an allergic reaction is practically non existent. Dr. Rostami and Dr. Nazemzadeh use PRP to help rejuvenate your skin (in this case, around the eyelids). It’s a great option for patients who are looking for a way to freshen up dark circles or help return a little vitality to the skin around the eyes.
PRP treatments are often paired with another non-invasive treatment: Microneedling. The combination of microneedling and PRP makes each procedure more potent; this means the skin look smoother and more youthful than it would with either procedure individually. If you’re curious about what this procedure can do for you–and how it can get rid of those deep lines and dark circles around the eyes–contact Dr. Nazemzadeh or Dr. Rostami to set up a confidential consultation and begin your transformation today!
What is Platelet Rich Plasma?
The use of platelet rich plasma for cosmetic purposes is a relatively novel development. PRP injections were originally used to help promote healing of incision areas after surgery. However, it wasn’t long before PRP was being applied to healthy areas of skin in order to encourage and promote rejuvenation. Platelet rich plasma is, essentially, plasma (a component of autologous blood) that has been enriched with platelets. In this way, PRP is a completely natural and autologous (meaning from your own body) treatment; the risks of any kind of allergic reaction are quite minimal.
In order to generate the PRP for your injections, a minimal amount of blood equal to no more than the amount drawn for a basic lab test will be drawn. This blood will then be purified (usually in a centrifuge) and then enriched. This process usually takes only a short time, and once it is complete, the PRP will be ready for injections. In order to be most effective, PRP needs an accompanying procedure, such as microneedling, which can make the skin more receptive to treatment. The entire process can usually be completed in about an hour, but patients are encouraged to discuss their planned treatment with Dr. Rostami or Dr. Nazemzadeh during their consultation.
Platelet Rich Plasma for Eyelid Rejuvenation
As the human body ages, lines and wrinkles develop around the eyes. Many patients also find that no matter how much sleep they get at night, they are plagued by dark circles under the eyes. These issues are unique to the eye area, so it’s important to ensure that you receive your PRP eyelid treatment from highly trained and qualified medical professionals; Dr. Rostami and Dr. Nazemzadeh are among the most well respected eyelid surgeons in the country, and they have gotten fantastic results with PRP eyelid rejuvenation at their Virginia eyelid practice.
PRP injections are particularly well suited for certain types of eyelid issues because they encourage your body’s own healing powers to work for you. Once the PRP is injected, the growth factors (proteins, etc) and plasma work to amplify your body’s natural healing processes. That’s why microneedling is such an important accompaniment to PRP injections–microneedling gives your body something to heal. The two procedures work together incredibly well, meaning that when your PRP treatment is done, you will start to notice that your eyelids will look more youthful.
What Are the Benefits of PRP Injections?
Patients are lucky today in that they have many options for non-invasive eyelid rejuvenation. But these options may lead to some difficulty in deciding which procedure is best for you. In those cases, it might be prudent to look at the benefits of this procedure and see how much they align with your desired results. The benefits of PRP injections for eyelid rejuvenation include:
- The injection is autologous, meaning from your own body, so risk of allergic reaction is negligible
- The PRP works to rejuvenate the tissue around the eyelids, making them look more youthful
- PRP can help mitigate dark circles under the eyes
- The results of PRP are somewhat subtle, meaning that your face will look natural
- Rejuvenating the eyelids can help the entire face look more youthful
- PRP can have lasting rejuvenating effects
- PRP is relatively non-invasive, meaning that there is no lengthy recovery period

The PRP Injection Procedure and Results
Your PRP injection can be accomplished in a relatively short amount of time. The injections themselves will take only several minutes. However, if you choose to have microneedling performing around your eyes, that may add some time to the procedure. If you do have microneedling performed, Dr. Rostami or Dr. Nazemzadeh will usually intersperse the injections throughout the duration of the microneedling.
Once the injections are complete, it may take several days for your results to begin presenting. Peak results generally become visible after one to two weeks, as the plasma and other growth factors need time to energize your body’s healing properties. Peak results will typically showcase more vibrant looking skin, the mitigation or wrinkles and lines, and the diminishing of dark circles beneath the eyes.
